GJ Magma LTD. together with the Central Project Management Agency is carrying out project: DEVELOPMENT AND INDTODUCTION OF ORGANIC FERTILIZERS MADE FROM STRAW TREATED WITH BIOLOGICAL PRODUCTS AND SAPROPEL FOR MODIFICATION OF NON-PRODUCTIVE/DEGRADED SOILS TO FERTILE

No. 02-091-K-0006

Start of project implementation activities: 2024 04 05

End of project implementation activities: 2025 01 31

Project value: EUR 60 644,43, of which the amount financed by the EU: EUR 42 468,72

Project objective: to develop organic fertilizer made from straw treated with biological agents and sapropel, for the modification of non-productive soil to a level suitable for crop production.

Problems addressed by the project: The project develops organic fertilizers made from straw treated with biological agents and sapropel, at final prototype level, for the modification of non-productive soil to a level suitable for crop production, following the principles of the circular economy regarding the efficient use of resources and their return for repeated cycle to the essential part of the food chain - the soil.

Relevance of project activities: This is a project that is fully in line with all environmental principles of sustainable development. The essential component of fertilizer - straw - is an annually renewable natural resource of nature and man-made. The extraction of another component - sapropel - deepens the lakes, increases the amount of water, and at the same time delays ageing and death of the lake, rejuvenating the lake's ecosystem. Therefore, the habitats formed in the lakes are not changed. Lakes filled with sapropel are stagnant that have reached the aging stage. If nothing is done, such a lake would gradually become covered with turf and disappear as a lake habitat, turning into a swamp.

These activities are in line with the goals and objectives of the UN Sustainable Development Programme, the European Green Deal and the Paris Agreement.

Sapropel is a natural organic product, there can be no harm. European Commission Regulation (EU) No. 354/2014 allows the use of sapropel in organic agriculture.

This project aims to bring together the two strands of the circular economy into one more efficient whole:

  1. After processing the by-product of cereal cultivation - straw - into a product of higher added value, return it to the essential part of the food production chain - the soil.
  2. To create a new development breakthrough for the use of an inefficiently used natural organic matter resource - sapropel from freshwater lakes - by introducing it to the market as a better product for modifying non-productive soil into fertile soil. This new whole, created in accordance with the principles of the circular economy, will be more efficient and have a higher added value than the components used separately.

In order to evaluate the novelty of the product, a survey of market participants related to sapropel and straw research and processing was carried out in March 2024. All interviewed respondents confirmed that they have no knowledge about the production or sale of fertilizers with similar composition. By combining novelty with efficiency and higher added value and high demand in the global market, the product is positioned as a radical innovation. It is a more advanced technological solution acceptable to users in the global market for the modification of non-productive soil to fertile soil. There is simply no knowledge of other similar and suitable organic material that exists in large quantities on the market.
